Photos of Hindu sculpture, temples and paintings
This week we augmented our Hinduism gallery with 30 black/white and sepia photographs of Hindu sculptures, carvings, temples and holy people. Stay tuned for more, as we are on a bit of an India kick this month!
Below is a rock carving from Mamallapuram depicting the paradise of Indra. Mamallapuram is a group of temples in Tamil Nadu, India, built from the 7th-9th centuries AD, that features scenes from the Sanskrit epic the Mahabharata. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Hindu god illustrations from 1800s
We recently added several interesting illustrations to our Hinduism gallery. This set was done in the mid-1800s, and the pictures appear to have been hand-colored. This is an image of Vishnu, considered the preserver of the universe, and part of the Hindu trinity (or trimurti) that includes Brahma and Shiva.

Warwick Goble’s illustrations of Chaucer works
Last week we expanded our collection of Warwick Goble artwork by adding the illustrations from a 1912 edition of works by medieval English poet Geoffrey Chaucer. Images (available as 300 dpi jpgs) include scenes from The Canterbury Tales.

Constantinople paintings of Warwick Goble
The latest addition to our gallery of images by early-20th-century illustrator Warwick Goble is a subset of the pictures painted for the 1906 book Constantinople. For high-resolution images, please visit our gallery.

In my opinion, many of the watercolor images in this set lack the detail and exotic flavor of the Indian myth paintings (see previous post), but some are quite evocative.

Indian myth paintings of Warwick Goble
Forthcoming in the next month or so are a new set of images related to India, and Hinduism. In the process, we encountered the lovely paintings by early-20th-century artist Warwick Goble used to illustrate Donald MacKenzie’s Indian Myth and Legend. The illustrations depict scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, ancient Hindu epic poems written in Sanskrit. Full-resolution (300 dpi) images are available for immediate download.

Eon Images is back (after a brief hiatus) on a new hosting platform–shout out to Photodeck.com, a very user-friendly and affordable image hosting service–check them out!
As we add large batches of new content, or have anything to say on the topic of royalty-free and public domain content, we will add new posts.
We also hope to add an illustrated Today in History feature–check back soon.
We are also exited to announce a new service–super-fast delivery of high-resolution images from the Library of Congress. While that agency does a wonderful job of making images available to the public, many of its digital images have to be special ordered, a process which is lengthy and expensive. Eon can provide you with any already-digitized content from the Library of Congress in a few days (usually in 48 hours or less), for less than the cost of ordering a print or digital file directly. Use our contact form on the main site if you have questions about this new service!
